Eligibility

Enrolled at a four-year U.S. college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education; students attending two-year colleges who meet the credit hour requirements may be eligible at the laboratory’s discretion

University sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate students; freshmen who have reached the credit level of a sophomore before starting the internship are also eligible

Studying in a program of study that is relevant to the research interests of the participating laboratories

U.S. citizenship; some participating laboratories will consider permanent residents

Participants will spend a continuous 10 weeks during the summer

New undergraduates will receive a $7,500 stipend

Returning undergraduates will receive a $9,000 stipend

Graduate students (must be in graduate school taking graduate courses) will receive a $11,500 stipend.

Stipends will be deposited bi-weekly

SMART Program provides STEM students with the tools needed to pursue higher education and begin a career with the DoD.

With a full scholarship, students pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degrees will be able to focus on complex research to further the DoD’s mission and create lasting impact

SMART is a one-for-one commitment; for every year of degree funding, the scholar commits to working for a year with the DoD as a civilian employee.

Pursuing a degree in, or closely related to, one of the SMART STEM disciplines

Be enrolled in a U.S. accredited college or university with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

18 years of age or older at time of application

U.S. citizenship; Obtain and maintain a security clearance

Internship with the Department of Defense in the summer

Full tuition with an annual stipend between $25,000 - $38,000

Book and Healthcare allowance

Full-Time employment with DoD, post graduation

Research interns are active participants and conduct hands-on laboratory research (NRL)

Research interns work under the guidance of senior Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) staff

Provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of the Navy laboratory during the summer (NAVAIR).

SFRP

Summer Faculty Research Program

SFRP broadens the scope and horizon of faculty member's research interests and provide a foundation for future research collaborations.

Not only does it allow access to equipment and other resources that are not available at their home institutions, but it provides an understanding of the Department of the Navy (DoN) research interests and the technological implications thereof, thus enhancing the abilities of fellows to pursue and obtain funding for research at their home institution.

DHA/STRL allows agencies to hire students enrolled in a Scientific, Technical, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) course of study at an accredited institution of higher education on a temporary or term basis.

Pathways Internship Program

Designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions,from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work inagencies and explore Federal careers while still in school.

Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for conversionto a permanent job in the civil service.

A recruitment and referral program that connects federal and private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated college students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs.
